Experimental Music Composition Workshop, Beacon High School, 9-12 Grades

Project Lead: Mr. Walton

Musician and performance artist Adam Schatz will visit Beacon High School for a three-day workshop titled "Composing a Piece for Processed Ensemble". It will focus on two areas: improvisation and sound processing.

Schatz will work with our chorus and band students on improvisation techniques, composition, and collaboration. Students will learn how to create a long-form performance piece that uses synthesis and live sound manipulation. Chorus and Band students will work in groups to compose a series of small pieces that will be connected with improvised sections of music. The whole piece will be "tied together" with live sound processing, creating a unique experience for the audience as well as the performers.

Music Department Chair, Ms. Wright

“Thank you so much for funding the Adam Schatz 3-day workshop and culminating event at Beacon High School. 100 band and chorus students who took part enjoyed it immensely and learned so much! One of the Arts Standards for NYS is improvising, which can be hard to teach in large ensembles. Adam was an expert at making the experience both enlightening and fun.”
